Thinking in terms of lacemaking as a job, not a hobby, repetitive work
but requiring the attention of the operator, I liken it to
touch-typing in a later era.
Typing was something 'women could do' for income as was lacemaking.
Both require small-motor
You have raised several interesting topics. I've been making lace for 18
years. I started when I was working full time so I had limited time to put on
lacemaking. I've done more since retiring.
Lacemaking is not fast. Some people are faster than others...true for most
activities. They move

obviously some patterns go a lot quicker than others. I do a fair bit of
Idrija which is quite quick to finish as there are so few pairs -just the
sewings slow you down, but they are easy because they are just into a loop.

I've done several lots of yardage, the latest was 3 yards + of Torchon to go
complement a large Torchon square I rather liked. The intention is to put the
square on a cushion with the yardage round the outside, gathering the lace at

done designs, taught others, taken lessons to learn new types of lace, I
also have a couple of pillows that have yardage on them.
They are my "go back to to relax and do some mindless lacemaking for a
while" pillows.
Iâve been making lace since 1980, but Iâve never made much. School,
children, work, all interfered with my lacemaking. Took my first lace course
in 2004, and my coursework has increased since then. My lacemaking
experience is limited to small pieces. But for the past few years I
