Barbara,
With under 1500 people in your database, you would be able to clean up
everyone very quickly. I have worked on cleaning up file imports with over
80,000 individuals. For that particular file it took 100 hours. With only
1500 people, it wouldn't take long at all and you would have all o

I am testing an export to send to a cousin. My Legacy file was originally

some sources and some minor editing, I exported a GEDCOM, selecting the PAF

That's exactly what I was trying to figure out--if I export JUST my
ancestors, I don't have the siblings, spouses, children--how do you do
that--do you select ancestors and then add the others individually?

I love Legacy! I had used FTM for a lng time before that but when
they changed their interface I decided it was time to change. I have never
looked back. Legacy has tons of USEFUL features that FTM has never even
thought of.

I did something like that. I only exported my direct line (including
siblings, their spouses and children). That way my file was smaller and
easier to work with. I added back selected individuals later on. Many of

Hello Barbara
I'm another FTM to Legacy convert. I have never regretted it and can't
believe what I put up with in FTM. Legacy is a great program, the support
offered in this group is great and I'm really looking forward to the version
7 release(whenever that may be). I think I had about 2500 peop
Barbara,
It is well worth the effort. I have over 23,000 names and
bout 2,000 photos that I've switched over from FTM.
Legacy has actually helped in that you can easily clean up
your files with the Legacy tools.
I am sold after over 10 years of FTM.
Sincerely,

Hi Barbara,
I switched to Legacy from FTM a few years back and have not regretted the
move. A couple of friends still use FTM and ask for my help sometimes with
the program. I get frustrated when using their program when I cannot do
things as easily as I can in Legacy. For Legacy 1498 individuals
>From those who have switched over to Legacy from FTM, is it worth the
effort? I have 1498 individuals in FTM. I'm willing to spend time, if in the
end, it's a much better program (it certainly looks to be from what I see on
the web site).

With regard regard to the extra spaces in the middle of lines when you
import from FTM to Legacy, that is very easily overcome during the im port
process. On the GEDCOM Import page there is a box that says CUSTOMIZE. Click
on that and then on the right hand side of the next box is a place to sel
Michele,
Thanks for this good information. Let me further pose a thought (I'm trying
to get all this figured out before I purchase the Legacy software, and
believe me when I tell you my FTM file is HUGE).
I just read something at the Legacy site about having several GEDCOM files
open at once, and
Hello listers,
After all the comments about uploading, downloading and merging
from Ancestry to Legacy, I decided to finally try it. So far it
looks okay except for one aggravating thing.
When I downloaded from Ancestry and then imported to a new file
in Legacy, I now have AKAs for EVERYONE. I
Barbara,
I switched from FTM to Legacy and have never regretted it for a moment.
However, I will warn you about a couple of things. When I transferred the
data I found that my notes had some spacing problems. For example, where
there was a line break in FTM there will be space in the text in
Family Tree Maker, I understand, it basically makes a whole copy of
each picture and stores it in the program. This also takes up more
hard disk space generally, as you usually have the picture someplace
on your hard drive for use elsewhere, and then it takes space again in
the FTM file.

Hello,
I am about to purchase the Legacy Deluxe. I'm currently using Family Tree
Maker 2005. I have the step-by-step instructions printed out, to transfer my
FTM file to a GEDCOM and then import. But, I'm wondering if there might be
some "hints" that I would want to do within the FTM, BEFORE I expo
I'm just about ready to order the Deluxe Legacy software--have been using
Family Tree Maker for the past year and input TONS of data into that
program, unfortunately. The training video mentions that the Legacy software
does not store the photo itself, but rather a link to where it is stored on

Thank you Cathy. I appreciate your clear and concise letter about your
arrangement and use of Legacy pictures and will adapt it to my computer

Do you use the photo album scrapbook? Do you have success printing larger

Go to Search List, Print Index, Row1, remove the
duplicate field names or check if Row2 or Row3 is
checked in error. Or make the columns less wide.
You can adjust them by hundreths of an inch.
Hope one or more of these options help.

I did a birthday calendar for a reunion. I had ALL the descendants of my

most people were VERY interested. It was fun for them to see who shared

Valerie,
When you click "Print" a screen pops-up which enables one to choose the oprions
required. Click the "Row 1" "Row 2" tabs etc to select what you wish. The lower
set of options can be changed by clicking "Customise".

When I print an index report I am getting:
RIN Surname Given name born etc across one line
On the second line I am getting the RIN number again under the surname.
How do I stop getting this please as it is causing an extra line to

Hi all,
Do you have any suggestions/ideas/hints on genealogical reports I can
generate from Legacy that
are popular with the family for the holidays?
Perhaps birthday calendars, or neat looking family trees, or
fill-in-the-blank questionnaires, or something else similar and fun?
Thanks.
