Can you clarify what the source is attached to at present?
I can only guess.
1) You have an "empty event" with a source attached. If so, edit the event.
However I don't know whether this could be the situation as I can't
attach a source to an empty event. Legacy is asking for an Event N
Here is what I am doing. I created a Master Source. In this case a Death
Certificate. I then go to the individual and click Cite a Master Source. I
select the death certificate and then I select it and am returned to the
"Assigned sources for" window. In the Events column this entry is blank.

You highlight the death event
You click the Cite a Master Source and choose your Death Certificate.
When the Source Details window pops up, you enter more detail or just
click Save.

This is exactly what I am doing. What is blank is the "Events" cell. If I
highlight it in the same window under it I see "Death: blah blah blah". So
my issue still is how to get "Death" in the event cell.

(on the right under Add a new source button)
If not, an event that isn't sourced won't show.

From the Individual Screen, are you clicking on the Sources icon? So
that what pops up next is called "Assigned Sources for: (person's
name) [RIN]" ?
First, is it mostly a blank list? In the middle right, is your check
box checked for "Show All Events"? Check it if you'd like to show all

Seems Don has perceived what your problem was.
If you enter more than one source for any event whether death or
residence or occupation or ... you'll find the same thing.
If you enter more than one residence event and only one source for
each resident event, then the event cell will be
