In Legacy, Privacy brackets are double square brackets
[[what you want kept private]]
In Reports and exports of your file to either another Legacy file or
a Gedcom you have the option of including material in Privacy brackets or not.
You'll find more explanation in the Help file if you search

Certainly I wouldn't send it just bracketed as no one else would know
what you meant.
I'm fairly new to Legacy, but how about adding a
"Z" to the end of the last Surname. It might be worth a try. Good luck.

I use a "#" at the end of questionable names, as it will sort the name
into the correct place in an alphabetic sort, but is still obvious.
You can also search for any name that "contains" a # to create a list of
questionable items, or to mark all the questionable items as Private so
they don't app

As for the reason behind it, you might want to mark the person
"Private" by checking the box on the lower right of their individual
screen. This will give you the flexibility of not exporting them in a
GEDCOM (

More specifically, I'm referring to the question mark. For example, if I'm
unsure of a given name, I'd like to enter "Henry?" rather than just "Henry."

You do not say what characters. In general the answer would be yes, but what
you intend to use the data for is just as important. For example if you are
to use the DB to create webpages then would html allow your characters?
