Here's what I'd try.
Under Family view, go to the individual that you had previously
attached the source to.
In with the icons below their name and data there should be one that
looks like a stack of books -- and if you hold your mouse over it should
say Show list of Assigned Sources.

Here's step-by-step.
1. Open a new event and name it. I generally use Residence instead of
Census, but that's just a personal choice.
2. To the left of the description you will see a blue triangle. Click
