I know that I am regularly told when using auto merge that it doesn't work
if the date is a whole year without month or day. It is often the case
that as you go further back in time, a year may well be the nearest you can
get to a confirmed date, with information from census returns, Wills, etc.
I would recommending doing this on a *copy* of the gedcom if you're
not really comfortable with the process.
However, abt and circ aren't dates that the Merge will automatically
merge. You'll have to decide whether or not it's an exact match.
Merge will do an auto merge only on exact dates.

Thanks to all who tried to help - and yes, Graham, let's hope it happens
one day.

Hopefully one day we will find a way to keep Legacy, Ancestry's online
tree and Family Tree Maker all synced. Because like you Elizabeth, I
think that the sources that Ancestry find are fantastic, and so easy to
add to the tree. Maybe one day, their (Ancestry) people will talk to our
Legacy people.

hanks for your help but unfortunately I am still left with more than 2000
not merged. One problem is that the incoming file has different RIN
numbers and there are little discrepancies, such as cir. in one case and
abt. in the other.
I think I might just give up!

This process creates a Legacy database file that can then be merged with your
existing database file. Call this File A.

Yes, I see. A new empty file into which the gedcom from Ancestry goes.
Tidy up and delete rubbish.
Then, should I add a copy of my Legacy family file or a gedcom from it and
then save the resultant merge as a new family file? The biggest problem I
see with this scenario is that I shall have lost

Thanks, I'll do that. Can you please explain why when using IntelliShare,
sometimes Legacy seems to think two quite obviously different people should
be merged? I have two different people with nothing whatsoever matching
that Intellishare is trying to merge. As I move through a list of people,
Any GEDCOM tag that starts with the underline _ character is a custom
tag created by the program that exported the GEDCOM. You would have to
ask what the _MILTID tag means on an Ancestry forum or to the support
staff at Ancestry.
