Well now I'm really confused. I'm not really sure what the problem
was before. I've now gotten things to work, without setting TEXMF.
Sorry for all the confusion.

Mats, Well, I got things working. It seems that what was necessary,
was for me to put the line
export TEXMF={$HOME/texmf,/usr/share/texmf}
in my .bashrc. After I did that, then lilypond could find the ec
fonts in my $HOME/texmf. Now lilypond 2.4.0 seems to work.
Thanks again.

Jan LilyPond uses kpathsea, the tetex search mechanism to find the
Jan fonts

Again, this looks like some problem with magical environment variables.
Mats Look especially for the feta-braces* and feta-din*.

So, This incompatibility must be fixed. Incidentally, I still can't
get the emacs mode to successfully run lilypond. I must do it from
the command line :-(.

I'm typesetting some piano music in LP 2.2.6, which appears to work
ok, with one exception -- there is no curly brace to the left of piano
staff. I would guess that this is due to some font problem. Any
suggestions about tracking down the problem?

I also have problems with dynamic markings (like, p, mp, etc.) not
printing. Any suggestions as to tracking down why these fonts end up
not printing?

What does the following warning (in LP 2.2.6) mean?

Things seem to typeset as desired, but I'm always concerned with warnings?

Start emacs from the shell you start lilypond from, or add your
LILYPONDPREFIX setting to your ~/.gnomerc

them, but how do I let lilypond know about their location?

I figured out the last problem (needed to set LILYPONDPREFIX and
source lilypond-profile.sh). However, whenever I try to run lilypond
on anything, I get the warning below and no output.
warning: lily-guile: installation problem: deprecated encoding requested: feta-music
