which have the same measures duration. In the remaining cases

This is a feature!
PianoStaff are now removed only if both staves are empty.
To be able to remove staves from PianoStaff independently, simply add
\context {
\PianoStaff
\remove Keep_alive_together_engraver
}
to your \layout block.

this because if I use a global variable containing the tempo
indications (with the \tempo command) and spacer rests, I would not be
able to use it for parts with MMR if I want these tempo indications
to be centered above these MMR.
