Hello,
I was wondering if anyone else had any experiences installing and
running Patrol under Linux/390, specifically how can it be installed so
it can be shared among Linux images. It seems to want lots of
directories in read/write mode. On stand alone Unix systems we tend to
give Patrol a 1-2gi

Hi,
this APAR was mainly done for the may2002 - stream and the "access boxed
dasd" feature.
We started issuing a SNID as the first command to the device in order to
determine locking status with this stream. Before, we used SNID only after
a rejected SPID (to determine if a PGID was already set)
What flavor of LINUX would you pick if you were starting from the beginning?
We are currently at this point and I'm looking for pros and cons. Thank you.
As with anything, "it depends."
What are your objectives?
If this is a just-learning-about-it project, and if you don't require
vendor support, Debian is easier to install than either SuSE or Red Hat,
comes with a relatively recent kernel, and is extremely easy to keep
up-to-date. If you can pr

Hi Tim,
I believe the kernel patches are incomplete as far as s390(x) is concerned.
You will need to rework the kernel patch that updates the svc table. This
table is written in assembler in the arch specific part. rsbac has the same
issue. It is quite trivial to do, but it needs to be done.

IBM - it has a jit. Blackdown doesn't (for s390). IBM have also just
released their 1.4 JDK for s390.

Wher Can I get the IBM version for Linux/390???
I suggest you get IBM's version. It works, it was made my the manufacturer
of your system and its better (in my opinion) than Sun's or Blackdown's
implementation.

1.4 was NOT tested with Oracle, I would go with the 1.3.1 which does work.

I am attempting to install SLES7 in another instance. This time I want to

Please disregard the attached email. I just found my problem. I had
neglected to format the filesystems.
I have been fighting this the past two days and I guess I gave up too soon.
Sorry...

Thanks for your speedy response. To answer your question yes, I created the
filesystems but neglected to format.
Thanks again...

Which ever one they certify for it. blackdown is AFAIK not certified for much
right now, so consider it a possible optional. Otherwise go with the what your
vendor recommends.

Websphere runs today on SuSE Linux. I have also heard that Lotus Domino will
be ported to Linux for S/390, there was no mention that it would be
specifically Redhat. If it was, it would be a grave mistake.

This is part of what we mean when we say
"free as in speech" -vs- Linux NOT being "free as in beer".
There are costs, but the customers hands are UNtied.

Yes, as typical the MKT FUD usually is the factor, while it is correct
that RH and IBM press about this was made a couple weeks ago SuSE has had
ports for PPC based systems, for some time and just as many press

rpm is GPM. rpm is from Red Hat
Anaconda (RHL installer) is GPL. YAST (SuSE installer) is not.
In fact, all the RH software I've seen is GPL.
I think the implication you make that RH is somehow unfair
Hmm. I was hoping that the Linux software developers would have taken the
LSB and applied it to Linux/390. I guess I should say I was _expecting_
that. There are so few differences between Linux/390 and the others, it
just seemed to be the sensible thing to do.

Benchmark it before you decide the IBM one's faster. Back in the days of 1.1.x
IBM's had the JIT, Blackdown was faster on _my_ work which was CPU-intensiv

That's what I meant by "making the filesystems." :-)
In any case, glad you got the problem solved.

Hello from Gregg C Levine normally with Jedi Knight Computers but
speaking for myself
I would choose Red Hat. After that? Probably build my own, based on an
available distribution for Intel. Please ask whose. But that's not what
you want to know, sir, it's Red Hat. That's what I'd choose first.

I would agree with that sentiment.
It is like the BSD's, there is a standard, LSB, but will RH and the group
Unitedlinux go along the same road? I think not if I read it correctly,
seems RH thinks they are the standard, same on the United side. It would
be interesting if RH did all the marketing and a group of United whatever
