Hallo list,
I am a experienced in zVM but a novice in LINUX.
We are running zVM in a lpar with 2 real IFLs. The first test machine has 1
virtual processor and seems to run fine. I read the advise to define the same
number of virtual processors as real were available. So I started to define a

Do you have a workload on Linux that allows work to be done on two
CPU's at the same time? If the application does not cr
Hi Daniel,
How right you are!, I just tried it. Very strange that on SLES8 (GNU sed
version 3.02.80) it lacks the "-i" option, but on SLES9 (GNU sed version
4.0.9) it is supported. You would think SUSE would keep SED up to date on
SLES8?

Make that *ANOTHER* since trying to use the same file for input and
output most times does not work as you would like. M

it does it on EVERY system. Fresh install also. So unless every one of my
linux images is corrupted in exactly the same place in the file system, I
wouldn't expect FS corruption to be causing it.
The version we're running is 0.80. Looks like a new build was released
today, actually. clamav 0.81rc
Well I installed the new version .081rc1 - Doesn't seem to have changed the
behaviour. I presume nobody else is getting this error. It only shows up
when trying to run clamscan. When trying to run clamdscan, which uses
clamd, the error does not occur. (which of course makes sense)
Greetings All,
I am in the process of doing an exploration for a proof of concept

information on which flavor of Linux is best suited for various types of
deployments. I have looked in the archives but cannot seem to

also understand the Redhat works well also.

I have worked with both redhat and suse on this platform and i seem to like
suse better. Suse seems to have betters tools to get the job done in my
opinion. Plus suse has a good backer with novell and ibm.

For anyone that cares... if I directly specify the daily.cvd file, clamscan
works. This command, clamscan -r -d /var/lib/clamav/daily.cvd / works, so I
may have a bug or issue to report to the clam AV people.

I suspect you have more than one clamav installed and therefore you
might have some strange combination of lib and path.
I'd check the following:
which clamscan# to see where it's executed from
ldd `which clamscan` # to see what libs are accessed
strings `which clamscan` | grep conf # to see

They almost certainly will not be available for free download. If you
activate the 30-days of support that you get with the free download, you
will be able to get them from the SUSE maintenance portal. If, that is,
they create new .iso files just for this. They don't always do that.

Picking a Linux/390 distribution is going to be very different from site to
site. You need to look at a number of things before deciding. The good
thing is you can get free evaluation copies for them and take a look for
yourself.
Things to consider:
Are you going to be using products that are ce
We are currently running SuSE SLES8-SP3 (31-bit) on our z800 mainframe under
z/VM 5.1.
We have a need to run the IBM Communications Server to replace
soon-to-be-unsupported communication controllers and CIP routers. This is an
ideal solution for us and a perfect use of Linux.

We seem to be settling on SuSE, more for support than any other reason. If
we choose SuSE and an application we need will only be supported on RedHat,
we will deal with that on a case-by-case basis.

Toto, I have a feeling we're not in the mainframe world any more.

Thanks to all that have blazed the trail of sles9 before me.
I have followed this thread pretty close and have used the installroot
procedure to create an installroot for my CDs. I can start the install,
get into yast, setup the DASD, and then I change my software to Minimal
install. But when the
We're about the same as Tom's group. We went with Red Hat for a year and
then moved over to SuSE for support reasons. For us, because of our current
relationship with Novell, there are annual cost reduction benefits as well
but the move was primarily motivated by support.

I kinda went around the README file and found a way to work using ftp and
ssh.
I had to mount cd 1 at /zlinux/cd1
mount cd1 again at /home//zlinux/cd1
then mount cd2 at /home//zlinux/cd2
cd3 etc.
I think it's because the first time it takes the full path that you give

Verify the checksum of your iso files and make sure they are good.
I have included a "cat mkinstallroot" make sure that the location from where
you mount and copy the CDs is accessible to the script. I used
/ISO_Images_Dir only as an example directory location. Yours will be
different.

Another option is to use SuSE, but contract with IBM for your support. We're
headed that direction, mainly to reduce the number of support agencies we have
to deal with on a regular basis.
