When I try to bring up yast2 , I see a whole lot of errors streaming by and
eventually, the gui pops up. The last screen full looks like this:

Hi Bernie,
how do you run it ? I start vncserver, connect there via vncviewer from my
desktop and run yast2 from xterm. I get no error at all.

Don't you need the X Window System group ?
Initially, I installed the 4 groups ( your 3 + the X Window group ) and I seem
to run into some sort of problem ( I don't remember what the errors were ) and
then I went on and installed the Gnome Desktop group and the Print Server group.

But your 3 groups do not provide nice/cute little icons when you go into yast2.
If I wanted icons, I think the X window group is needed.
I think the flexibility to use icons (yast2) or ncurses (yast) should be
available.

I do have xorg-x11-xauth installed and I do have x forwarding turned on in my
/etc/ssh/sshd_config.
So what do I have to do to bring up yast2 without exporting my display ?

Just make sure your SSH client has X forwarding turned
