without 3270 controller on hmc
I attended an IBM z/VM for Linux Administrator class last year, they had
indicated that HMC support was being worked on for the OPERATOR console. In
fact you can specify SYSCONS (sp?) in the SYSTEM CONFIG as of z/VM 3.1 even
though it was not yet fully implemented

Right, Jeff. You also need it for stand-alone DDR. (DSF supports the
HMC; stand-alone dump
Thanks to all who responded. I understand about the utilities which use 3270
data streams and/or require an interrupt from a real device, but I often find
myself in situations at customer sites where I need to bring systems up to
test something and cannot afford to wait until a gen takes place.
Actually, yesterday was the first time I used the HMC console as the IPL
console. First IPL of z/VM 4.3 and the config on the 2074 was wrong so
I completed IPL on the HMC including enabling the address on the 2074.

Is this no longer a planned
My understanding is that z/VM does not support the HMC

is it possible to ipl z/vm in an lpar without a 3270 controller and a 3270
display,
using the hmc display? then acquire the operator console via tn3270 via
the
osa?

In practical terms, no. You MUST have a 3270 controller to INSTALL z/VM.
Regards, Jim
Jim is right. To install z/VM you need a controller... but to IPL z/VM
after installation no controller is needed.

Unless you are using an MP-3000 where you can define an 3174 control
unit as an emulated device and use the TN3270 on the HMC to connect to
it.

z/VM *does* support the HMC integrated system console. A 3270 is
required for installation and configuration, but not for operation.
