Pretty much right. I normally broadcast on 192.168.x.255 or whatever the broadcast address of the LAN I'm on is, but loopback works fine. Point-to-point works as well which we use to jump from subnet to subnet in work (not tested a cross-lan master-slave configuration but it should work fine if
