I now managed to get both
rpm -bc /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/mailx.spec
and
rpm -bi /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/mailx.spec
to execute without errors.
But
/var/tmp/mailx-root/bin/mail
is identical to
/bin/mail
What am I missing _now_?

Use Navigator Standalone instead of Communicator and it won't do it,
as well as save you a few megabytes of RAM.
