Yes there is truth to the statement. The European Commission - or more
specifically the Information Society Directorate-General of the EU has
made it very clear to ICANN that they either get .eu listed or else it's
bye bye USG root servers. You might want to find the EU contact for
this a Mr. P

I anticipate ICANN and the EU have made a deal on the .eu tld after EU
