I've used barcode readers with ltsp workstations, and they work just
fine. I use
the keyboard wedge type devices and have had no problems at all.
As for printers, I haven't tried a barcode printer, but normal printers
work just

Is the workstation creating the RamDisk? Do you see many errors when the
system boots up?

An even more expensive solution would be to run a Citrix Metaframe server
(which has a linux client). With the massive and ever growing number of
licenses required for Metaframe it would probably be cheaper to by new
Windows workstations though.
