I've got a fresh LTSP5 install that's working fine, except that when a
user logs out (or even shuts down the workstation) the ssh session and
the X11 tunnel associated with it doesn't get released.

I was under the impression that there was a way to configure the gnome
volume applet to control Pulse Audio though.

On debian testing (lenny) and unstable (sid) you don't need to
configure X because xorg 7.3 autoconfigure at launch. If you need to
set options, put them in lts.conf.
Also, package are the same in Ubuntu Gutsy. Gutsy documentation is
relevant.
