While this is definitely a syntax issue, it isn't a problem. I read through
the source code that instanciates the Xrm resources from the xdm-config
file. Of interest is the section that checks for the first non-whitespace
character on a line. If the character is a !, it is immediately treated as

Soren, did you fix your problem? From what you're sayin the X from the console
does not seem to be able to contact the XDM on your server. One way I usually
debug such problems quickly is to launch X manually from a console.
In your lts.conf change your SCREEN_01 for:
SCREEN_01 = shell

Sometimes this problem has to do with DNS too. Make
sure the DNS settings are correct. Sometimes the grey
screen will go away and XDM/GDM will kick in after a
few minuets of inactivity.
