Although this has nothing to do with historical theory, I do always
look for the linear descent to the final when marking out a harmonization.
Amost all Western music has it.
In historical theory, the final itself will normally be an indicator of mode.

Although I studied harmonization, it was geared towards Bach and
later. For earlier music, you need to look at the sources directly.
There's two things, basically, to consider. One is harmony, that is,
the chords or more complex harmonic structures.
Two is the voice-leading. You need to be aware

Beautiful! Bravo! I love Carolan's music- very well played too; wish
I had the time & brains to arrange his music for lute, one of my old
favorites. (used to play versions on lyra viol, years ago). Nice
lute, too. One of my friends is getting a theorbo from Van Edwards.
