use the amsmath environments:
However using amsmath is a much more better way

eqnarray has a wrong spacing, never use it ...
Now the question arises for me, if LyX could offer a little more support
for the amsmath

bibliography. How do I make the bibliography 'global' so that its
contents can be seen from all the parts.
I really dont want to have a bibliography at the end of each chapter.

good, ust how i want them.
I have even maanged to redefine {plain} so that the chapter title pages
put the page number in the right place consistent with the rest of the
document.
However another problem has arisen.
