luckily lyx is based on an ascii file, and i was able to edit the lyx file
and remove all instances of change tracking. that fixed the document.
i first thought that the problem was with notes and changes - but there was
more than that. could be change_unchange.

Format - Document - Page to set the page size to 96 x 128 mm.
As lyx does not have format option and also the ghost viewer(gv) in linux
does not have any format option.
