In Emacs at least, the insertion point is logically placed just to the
right of the character covered by the block cursor, and I guess it's
the same in other programs (at least for left-to-right writing.)

Try using the url package -- it is designed to break long stuff like
URLs at good places, such as after a slash. It works nicely for file-
