Sorry, it didn't work. Only gave me the references from bib files in
the current directory. So, I hope someone can find a solution.

The above works for LaTeX, but not inside LyX. When the file is compiled,
it finds the bib files in the path. However, Insert Citation inside LyX
does not respect the BIBINPUTS path. How can this be fixed?
Every time Apple comes out with a new version of OS X,
BIBINPUTS gets broken, and a new workaround has to be
found. I found the following works
for Yosemite, so I post here (I should I put it on a wiki)?

Sorry for posting to quick, the last issue with wide citation dialog box
solved itself. But still, the question is how to set
the path for bibtex.
The alternative is to give direct paths to the BIB files.
However, that is an issue when you collaborate with people
on a document.
Furthermore, it seems there is a bug in LyX. When
I give direct paths to the BIB files, the citation dialog box
becomes superwide, stretching beyond the width of my l
This is more of a latex question. Bibtex finds the location of BIB files
from the environmental variable
BIBINPUTS. This is true on both Windows and Mac, and has worked
so far. But suddenly, today, it doesn't
work on Mac anymore. What I have used until now is the

No, not to the PATH variable. That finds executables. You need to add a
BIBINPUTS variable, with the path to where you

Here you can change/add the variables.

I use Windows XP and Windows Vista with LyX 1.6.1.
What you need is the BIBINPUTS environment variable. I have this:

your bibfile, then I think it must be something else. Here's what I have:
BIBINPUTS=/home/rgheck/files/bibtex::
export BIBINPUTS
Now, in LyX, if I do: Inset>Lists and TOC>BibTeX Bibliography, I see not
very much at first, but then if I hit "Add", I

May be I should try to make it clearer here. When I click Bibtex Generated
Bibliography, I can see some default bib files like "test" and I can see my
file "bibfile". But when I try insert citations, I can only see references
from "test.bib" but not from my file. I did "Rescan" in Tools->TeX

If you could put together a minimal test case, we might be able to make
some progress here. It seems that LyX may misuse the BIBINPUTS variable,
perhaps searching underneath that directory? You might also try running
LyX with debugging enabled (see lyx -dbg).

I use lyx 1.4.3 with linux (Fedora Core 5), and in the past have found it

My impression was that this allowed bibtex by default to search for .bib
files in this particular directory, so that when it came to adding .bib
