I have to disagree in this debate. I have found lyx a *superb* tool for making
scientific posters! It gives a uniform look, as well as dealing with the proper
formatting of legends and cross-references. Plus, it properly formats my bibtex

Try to search the mail list for sciposter or a0poster... you should find some

I struggled with the a0poster latex packages and the .layout files that people
so kindly posted here, but I found them very hard to work with.
I looked for other options and found the sciposter package, together with
sectionbox, multicol and wallpaper latex packages. I found these much easier

perfectly.
