I have finally got it to work by following Brian Jones suggestion to change the
Domain Name Server (DNS) in my wireless router. It was previously set to the
DNS automatically provided by my Internet Service Point which is talktalk. I
changed it to the Google primary and secondary

TextEdit doesn't permit headers and footers. If you need to use these, you'll
probably be best getting Pages.

thank you for your response. Similar to Tony, I too am struggling with Mac.
There are so many functions used in Windows that I cannot do with the Mac .
This includes the issue of handling tables which you explained before and
particularly dealing with quick navigation of web pages:

edit area andinteract wiht the html area dn go to the last thing there.

Don't despair.
If you have Lion you can turn single letter navigation of web pages on in
Quick Nav settings.
This makes Voiceover work pretty much like a Windows screen reader on web
pages. So H will jump you to a header. B to a button, T to a table etc.
Also there are more powerful elements
I know how to switch it but I don't think it will hurt it.
Just hold down the keys 6 and 4 at boot up and it will remain in that state
until you reboot. I do this for my video editing when I do it and my audio
editing when I can get round to it.
