I now have managed to open one of the documents the .doc. File however I am
still struggling to open the .docx document.
As Anne points out clearly Pages can work with these file formats despite what
AppleCare tell me which I frankly find extraordinary that the software can't
email and then we may be able to give

Looks the file was some corrupted when you or someone saved that file. In that
case I would have them save the file again and send it to you.

Have you tried opening them with Text Edit.
If they will not open with Text Edit there may be a problem with the files.

I can't test this with Word 97 documents created on a PC, but with those
created on a Mac, it works fine. Anything earlier, however, doesn't open with
Pages.

Pages is an advanced word-processing application. However, if all you want in
the way of formatting is bold, italic, indentation and so on, TextEdit would be
good enough.
In Pages, you can use the templates that are provided, or create your own
templates including placeholder text.
