MacGroup: Problem with sons G3 Desktop

My sons computer has no sound. The sound adjustments in the control panel slides back down when adjusted? It says the sound port is in use by another application. But, it says to check the ports? There is nothing plugged into the mic or audio ports. Has anyone else experienced the same problems
