Yes, I've been seeing this behavior since 10.1 on 5.6.0, 5.6.1, 5.8.0,
5.8.1. Haven't had a chance to check it in Panther, though..

Wouldn't it work to do the system call like this:

since passing the params as a list should bypass the shell?

What version of perl are you trying to install under? I've had troubles
installing under 5.6.0 under both OS X and Linux, but had no problems on
either platform after upgrading to 5.6.1.
