There seems to be no option to reset the password at the login window. What
Apple instructed me to do was to use the recovery HD. The OS is installed, so
this should work.

I launched the install for Xcode and heard the computer ask for permission and
for my password.
Arrow keys would not produce any results other than the busy message, so I just
entered my password as prompted.

a "low energy" mode available that lets two devices stay connected while using
next to no power, enough to register a keystroke to wake up but not enough to
do any actual typing or anything.

That is one annoyance. If you have a display that goes to sleep after awhile,
sometimes you have to go back into accessibility and reconnect it if you shut
things off in the wrong order.
