Took the plunge last night and updated to Mavericks. After everything was

It says that my Wi-Fi connection has a self-selected address; all other devices
in the house are connecting fine.

reasons, I feel I should point out that the older MacBooks are still on sale
with optional SSDs, and that they come with both Ethernet and optical drives
which the newer models lack. This curmudgeon happens to think
