partition sizing can be adjusted after initially being created, does
this extend to the Bootcamp partition too? If so, then you could just
adjust later in disk utility.

I run Catalina on 2012 iMac. For reasons of compatibility with some apps &
Catalina not performing as well as I would have wished, I’m going to be
downgrading this machine to Sierra. This can be done as I can see from various
articles. I also run Windows in Bootcamp on the cata
to the Mac, and when I go to startup disks, I get an error and
it want open.
So it seems that I need to reinstall BootCamp.

I don't know, but your problem is a common one. Here's how to get around
it.
1.) Rely on some kind of USB audio device during installation. USB
headphones will work, or a USB speaker.
2.) After installation update your Bootcamp drivers for Windows.

That was my
situation when I installed Windows under Bootcamp.
Once installed you also install the latest Bootcamp drivers from Apple
for Windows, and your builtin speakers begin to work as expected.

Yep, just use 3.5 mm headphone and connect it to the output jack.
It works on my MBP mid 2014 model year machine.
