To Get VoiceOver To Read Mail Messages Automatically
Yeah, I fell into that trap early on with VO coming from Jaws. Now, when I
pick up my windows laptop, I have to remind myself where the tab key is and
not to grab the control and windows key with the arrows. It's very
disorienting some times. LOL

Hi
Hi Cara,
In a recent message you noted that it is possible to reorder the columns in the
messages table. I see in the view menu where you can eliminate some although
message status isn't one of them, sadly. But I don't see where you can reorder
them, e.g. I want subject first, furtherst to the

Hi Mary;
While the process to rearrange columns is somewhat annoying in my opinion, :)
it is really a set it and forget it type of thing, so once you do it you really
need not do it again. I.E. these settings will persist over newer versions of

Hi Dave;
What you'd like to do in Mail on the Mac in Snow Leopard 10.6.4 with VO,
is certainly doable. :)
First, simply move to the messages table and then just use plain arrow
keys (no VO keys necessary) to move through
thanks, Cara, for the post from Josh. I don't have a Macbook, so the trackpad
isn't available here. But I do have numpad commander and quicknav. Not much
good here, but good other places. Tradeoffs.

...and if you use the Mouse Keys feature, it's even easier to move a mail
message column:
•Turn off the NumPad Commander and turn on Mouse Keys, for example with the 5
times option key pressed (if you have enabled this shortcut)
•Make sure VO will speak what's under the mouse (see VO Utilities)
Hi,
Thanks a lot for this, Cara and Josh. I've always been wanting to know how to

HI,
My e-mails would read automatically, but I never wanted it to do that. SO I'm
just glad it saves me from hitting a key to shut it up.
As a side note, did anyone notice that pauses between punctuation like commas

You are quite correct, Mary. I do not use the preview pane. I prefer to have
each message open in its own window so I may easily reply to each individual
message in the thread. When done I simply press Command+W to close the window
or Command+Option+W to close all of the windows in the
Thank you for confirming this, Kevin. I was beginning to think it had all been

Hello Chris. To answer your question, Yes, there is another way to turn in bug
reports other than by sending emails to Accessibility; however, doing so
requires that one be an Apple developer. I am one such developer.

Hi,
It has nothing to do with the update. It's always been that way for me, even
back in Leopard when having it speak automatically by either using VO-A or just
letting it read.
Also, Alex does not breathe which I did report as well.

Yeah, I can confirm this, too. I agree that it's far more likely to be
a bug or an oversight, because it's not the only thing that needs
interaction now that didn't before. The downloads list in Safari won't
read the status anymore unless you interact. I can't see any reason
for changing that.

Hello Dave,
You can set VO to interact automatically when you tab to a field where this is
appropriate, but tabbing isn't always the best way to navigate with VO. Many
ex-JAWS users get themselves into a muddle by tabbing everywhere. As a very
very long-term Mac user, the tab key is the last
Your post brings up an interesting point about the preview pain. I don't use
it as I use Zoom along with VO, and so I don't want to have to scroll or
navigate down to the message area. Preferring the message open on top, then I
just hit delete or reply or whatever. I forgot to tell Apple

Hello Everyone,
I just updated to 10.6.4. Why-o-why did I do this?
