Also, you can do the VO-mouse-click (VO-shift-space) or VO-space to have
VO activate them.

One thing I find works is to turn VO off, right arrow until the message opens
(try moving up and down to re-focus on the conversation if necessary) and then
turn VO back on. This rarely happens to me, but doing the above always fixes it
and is much easier than a restart.

I can’t open a disclosure triangle to view the messages in conversations.
I have my view headers set to custom so it only tells me what I need to know.

It's more like those stupid balloons that would pop up that said things like,

I love the literalness of Apple's OS. A disclosure triangle is just that,
tongue NOT in cheek: I triangular area on the screen which, when clicked, will
disclose something to you. You may not need to have this information

you can open and close disclosure triangles with VO backslash. I have
