If it’s making an unusual noise, try running some of the test tools available.
There is a SMART Monitor utility you can download to check out the drive (might
not support USB drives) and see if it’s showing indications of a probable
failure. In leu of that, start pricing a new drive and be ready

it was booting up or otherwise working hard but I haven't noticed my Mac doing

Hi Angelo,
I can’t find any particular pattern to the disappearing. I’ve just restarted my
macbook air and was able to find the external drive attached to the airport

The thing is, mine's not slow. It makes me wonder whether it's an NTFS drive or
not.

Hi,
Really? Wow. That sounds like a horrible experience. For me, it's just as quick
as browsing Mac OS Extended Journaled drives. It might be worth reporting. That
doesn't sound right.

Hi,
Well obviously. ;)
Having more than one solution is always a good idea, and Terminal and Paragon
NTFS are just one of those I chose to outline, regardless of Paragon NTFS
costing a bit of money.
I know of MacFUSE but never got to mess with it, nor the NTFS 3G you're talking

Hi,
Paragon NTFS costs 39 dollars.
However, I've never messed with MacFUSE myself (which is the free product), but
I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction.

Hi Nick and all,
There is a free program that ads NTFS read and write support to mac. It is
called NTFS 3g. You can get this program and it costs nothing.
The coolest part about it is that, in your disk utility, you have the option to
format drives in NTFS if you so desire.

Hi,
If you are new to the Mac, you probably do not want to do this. However, if you
still feel like attempting this, you can enable the read/write to NTFS through
Terminal for a particular volume. That's the free way, but if you are not
careful, you could get potential problems.

Here's a thought, could this harddrive possibly be formatted in nTFS? If so,
that's probably why. I believe there is software you can get, so that
you'll be able to write to NTFS formatted drives.

Hi,
I was wondering if there is some kind of trick for copying something from the
hard drive of my Mack to my external one with mixed content. I tried to do
command-v, but it didn't work. It's not the hard drive I use to do my time
machine backups on. Any help would be appreciated.
