Correct me if I'm wrong (as if I need to ask you to) but don't CD and MD units use some sort of laser-diode, presumably a little like an LED and most LEDs require a forward voltage of only about 2V. Okay, I know nought about laser-didoes but surely they don't require voltage-multiplying circuit
