I've seen one for the JVC XM-R70, could possibly be done with an MZ-R50 as
long as you found the right pins on the chips inside (SCLK, FSYNC, SDATA),
the url is here

Here's the service manual. Have at it.

While I've never seen the inside of an R30 (or any other minidisc unit)
I would be very surprised to see a standalone DAC in there,
I would think that there would be one chip that took ATRAC'd data
in one end and put analog audio out the other.
And even if there was a seperate DAC in there, the

Is it possible to take the R30 apart and get a digital out?
It probably best to keep your digits out of the R30 if you want it to
continue to work.

Adding digital out *may* be as simple as adding a TOSlink transmitter *if*
the data decoder chip has an S/PDIF output pin. Most modern ones do. If
not, it will involve adding a digital audio transmitter chip, like the
CS8401, to take the serial data/bit clock/frame sync signals from the output

Forget it. The parallel port isn't quick enough to do that. You would need an
S/PDIF encoder chip (CS8210A I think is the chip) and a line

I'm a newbie with MD, and I own a R55.
On my soundcard and my CDROM, I have a digital output (2 pins)
Perhaps it's a silly question, but I would like to know if there is a
way to convert the digital
