The thing is my exhaust ultimately did rust so clearly they fail in diesels as
well. The pipe rotted on this w123 240D in a similar location by the front pipe
where my 220D exhaust rotted.

Having installed high wattage bulbs with relays in many cars going back to
the 6V days, I can tell you that the first thing to fail (when relays are
not installed) will be the contacts in the high/low beam switch.
My 944 with relays has 100/160W H4 bulbs. The C300's Bi-Xenons are
superior.

I should like to point out that I have one of the most rapidly driven W123s
I've ever seen. It seems like many people don't dare to drive a diesel care
very rapidly...

Indeed, MB does know about those sorts of things, which is why the circuits
are designed for the factory load. When you increase the wattage of the
bulb, you need to increase the wiring to handle it. Hence the relay (to
handle the higher switching loads) and new larger wires.
