Gosh thanks for all the replies so quick on Saturday night!
I had similar thoughts to Dan about the relative wisdom of skimping, and
similar thoughts to Curly about how 4 seasons might actually outperform the
mb part.
The guy who suggested four seasons is the son of a 30y mb master mechanic
and
Just to make this even more academic, the original 1987 evaporator hasn't
even failed yet (unlike every other part of the AC system). I am just
switching it because "I" am replacing the dash.

A little buffing and it's well worth $1000

My buddy's 79 is that color too, looks nice. There was a hard top for
sale on the Charleston CL last week or two

Did you get the hard top? It doesn't need a soft top - it should only be

Going by the picture posted earlier, the KlebSL has a hard top already. :)

For $500, just drill some drain holes so if you do get caught in the
weather, the water can run right out. Indoor-outdoor carpet on the
floor, replace the seats every couple of years, no need for that
expensive soft top

Well, I would not be surprised. As for B-52 missions, in which I was
involved, even if the enemy was not notified of the targets directly there,
were ways they could easily figure it out. There were spies on the ground

My original evaporator is also holding just fine, 349k miles on my '87 wagon.
My '95 sedan is the leaker, it has about 358k miles.

Which tells me that MB still didn't get it right by the end of production.
to me, that makes a stronger argument
I can probably sell a 107 hardtop. It never has been on the car. it
just takes up space. Black.

I see hard tops for sale around here all the time, but they’re mostly R129 hard
tops. Still, R107s come up with some regularity, so I’m betting if you keep
your eyes out you’ll find one.

After charging the battery overnight I got the SL started. Thought I heard some
chain rattle so I did not run it long. Want to check the stretch before I get
too far. It's got a little over 80k on it so it's getting into that range of
needing a chain.

Loren, no idea if the evaporator is original. No service records, I've owned
the car about ten years, about 75k miles. AC was not working when I got the
car, it had been converted to R134a, ignorant "mechanic" had add extra wiring
to try to gerry-rig the compressor to run. New seals and
Yes I have a hard top. I need to replace the soft top though

Looks that way. I haven’t been terribly attentive of late - got lots of stuff
going on.
