Similar experience when I put the 2.82 diff into the e420. The clunking
with the 1-2 shift went away with the new diff mounts.
Subframe bushings are another possibility.
I seem to have a clunk in the rear of the 87 wagon when going over bumps.
It is either the subframe bushings or an upper shock
Speaking of dead rubber vs. new rubber, the "new" differential and axles in
The White Whale (aka 124.193) are very smooth and quiet, I'm sure that the
new differential mounts help with that. I really should also replace the
mounts on my '95 E300 and see how much quieter that car will be. The

Yes. If it's a commercial vehicle driven commercially, it falls
under FMCSR
