What do you see yourself welding? Stick is devastatingly fast and simple for structural steel. We drove to South Dakota last summer. I bought a rooftop tent, but needed a rack. I bought a bunch of 6061, cut it to length with the skillsaw and bolted some crosspieces to some aftermarket rack feet.

I was watching some youtubers this afternoon setting up a Lincoln and a Miller using gas and it looked pretty easy to work on getting them adjusted. Then of course practice... I kinda like the 220V models, seem to have more flexibility. Advance Auto will sell them and with a perk and $50

I have a 220v Harbor Freight welder, MIG with flux core wire. I find it hard to use. As you said, it makes splattery welds and more often than not I just burn holes in what I'm working on. Maybe I need more practice, or maybe it's a crap welder, or both. I've been tempted by the "Cobra" welding

Like Rick said, it depends on what you want to weld. I also have a Hobart Handler 140 and bought the spool gun to go with it, but haven't used it yet. I do use the shielding gas and solid wire, but I have only used it inside so far. I use the MIG to tack weld the thin tubing (0.035") then finish
