I am appreciating the 1988 560 fuel injection system more and more. Just
have to get used to the fumes at cold idle and appreciate that it is never
going to push the limits of hp per liter. Much better than the 1994 e420 in
the dependability dept, though the m119 is a great motor in other forms.

some of their trucks had MB diesels, inclduing the Freightliner-badged
Sprinters but also heavier trucks. Never heard of it in school buses, not that

VW started using FI with the 1968 type 111, continued with the type 4, type 1 I
think in 1974 maybe 73, type 2
FI around 76. All very reliable but a bit over complicated.

The first winter I commuted with my '83 240D we had a run of 0F daytime highs.
I would go out and start the car at lunch and run it around a little to keep
heat in the engine so it would start after work. That was with M1 0w40 in it.
With 15w40 conventional I couldn't get it to start reliably b
I figured that out quickly as well. I had a piece of cardboard designated for
the radiator on that car that cut off about half of the radiator area. That
gave me reasonable engine temperatures in often sub zero ambients.
However, when I had daytime ambients of -20F or more accompanied by wind I

I routinely blocked off the radiator on my 200D winter beater. After the
wreck, I even ran without
the fan itself. (Damaged in the wreck.) When it got too warm to do that, it
was time to change
if that was closer I’d take a peek at it. It looks pretty unmolested. I wonder
if it has any other oddities….

heater clicks on at 5am, by 7am the windshield is mostly clear, the car starts
like it's July. Cabin heat starts by the end of the block...

Yeah, if you’re getting zapped when you touch ground and the car with the
heater plugged in, the heater is shorted to ground somewhere. Also why when I
had a timer and cord for a heater in my garage in WI it was on a GFCI
receptacle.
