This is maybe a $5k vehicle for someone adventurous, looks nice but a
headgasket is not a cheap fix. probably doable in the driveway but a
lot of work.

Not typically. A branded title is almost always due to an insurance claim of
some sort. I guess if you had a claim where the engine had to be rebuilt
(bottomed out oil pan, for instance) and the insurance company wrote the car
off for it, that could be a reason.
