Needle is a magnet drive (magnet spins inside a drum), odometer is direct
gears.

I'm thinking Timing also... I had a '69 250 that did that... turned out to
be a problem with the rotor & distributor. The backfires were just
scary i think I frightened the whole neighborhood!
And these cars came from the factory ready for unleaded fuel... I wouldn't
go back to that shop
Whole carb for $600? Thats not really bad, actually... I'd almost consider
it. Last I heard I thought they were $3500+!
Zeniths are just great when they're setup right, and they stay that way. I
just cracked mine open the first time since I bought the car 4 years
ago. I expect to get 20mpg

Call the US classic center. They're VERY helpful with this stuff. They
just got me part numbers for alot of zenith parts. They can't order
anything for you, but you can take the part numbers and go from here.
