In the 120k or so we put on it before some old codger T-boned my son in t, I had only done the serpentine belt on it as far as maintenance. The usual consumables, such as oil, filters and tires, yes, but nothing in the way of repairs. Bought it new in 2001. Definitely got our money out of it.

It's definitely a drive train component that's making noise when loaded/unloaded from what you describe. That would be U joints, flex discs and CV joints as far as I can think of. If you get the back end off the ground so you can turn the drive shaft and rear wheels it should be easy to identif
