From what I gather, the M117 usually needs a valve job around 250k miles, and in many cases a total rebuild around the 500k mark when the rings go -- but only in California, where people actually put that kind of mileage on a 450SL. Most other parts of the world they rust away or don't

Vapor lock? Look for a small leak in the injector ring or injector hoses. I don't remember much of an issue with that otherwise, but a slow leak there can let all the gasoline leak out of the ring as it boils. Leaks are a very common issue up there, and if you have a good sized one you
