Order a starter from Rusty. Don't go NAPA, as I did once / never again -- I
went thru five bad NAPA rebuilt ones before Rusty sent me one that
actually worked longer than a week. A year later, Rusty's is still starting

of wood and a hammer, or using one of the manual starter switches
(sold for turning the engine while you're adjusting valves, etc.) that
clamp onto the solenoid
Quick and dirty starter test. Open the door so the dome light is on,
try to start car and watch the dome light. If it does NOT dim, then the
problem is at the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch. Next
time it happens, try wiggling the gear shift or placing it in neutral.

That is flight-ops-normal for my 240D. I don't even try PARK any more -- I
pre-glow then drag the lever to NEUTRAL. Turn the key and drive away.
