The problem is with the asshatchet seats on road bikes you need the
padding on the riding shorts/longs to minimize harm to the nether
regions. Spandex helps to keep you cool too on longer rides, winter or
summer, because the sweat needs to wick away and evaporate. Having

When I was living in the Central Oregon high desert, there was a guy at the
local bike shop who had studded tires for his mountain bike. I'm not sure if
they were homemade or not.

The current fat tired bikes I've seen have fatter tires than the ones I rode in
the '40s which I would guess were the same size as the ones you rode delivering
papers. I think they were called "balloon tires" back then.
