On my 74, it would start in any gear, but the wiring on that thing was
futzed to no end. But check under the shift boot (where the reverse light
switch is).
Could it be because of the "safety interlock" switch that wouldn't let you
start the car without the seatbelt fastened? Most 115's have had
On my 74, there was a relay under the drivers side of the dash, just to the
left of the steering wheel. I pulled the relay and inserted a jumper wire,
as I recall. I am also the one that suggested you check the AC/Start relay on
the firewall, which as you state is not the problem.

take a peak under the shift boot. There are two do-hickeys there
with buttons. One even has a power connector on it. Up toward the
front of the shifter. Follow that wire and it will lead you to
nirvana, or maybe jimi hendricks
