Small wire (purple, I seem to remember) is the start current to
energize the solenoid. You can jumper to the connection at the shock
tower or to the terminal on the starter, or you can simply bridge the
big and small terminals on the starter to energize the solenoid.
MAKE SURE IT"S NOT IN GEA
Very likely a bad solenoid or a broken wire. Or a bad neutral safety
switch! Move the shifter around, ending in neutral to see if it starts
then. If not, check to see that the solenoid wire is getting voltage
when the key switch is in start position.

Try shorting across the big terminals of the solenoid with a big
screwdriver.
If that causes the starter to turn, short from the battery's big terminal
to the small terminal for the solenoid power. If the engine cranks, you
have bad wiring to the solenoid. If the engine does not crank, the

Just got back from picking up a 1980 450SL. The car is in pretty good shape,
but presently will not start. The car sat all winter, and does not even turn
