That's good to know. If someone has done this already, it would be nice to
see a picture of what it looks like without the plastic.

I have never seen glue under it. It just sort of snaps into place iirc.

I agree with you Dan, just remove it and enjoy the painted surface below.
Another alternative would be a vinyl wrap in a color matched to the
original color.
Therein lies the problem.
The original material is a vinyl sheet that is possibly glued to the door
frame. Years of exposure to the elements causes it to shrink and distort, so
anything you would pull off an existing vehicle would be a poor example. I’ve
never seen this stuff new, so I have no
Hmmm, what is the maximum length of the piece? That will determine what
size 3d printer you'll need.
Does it have a special texture?
It would probably be easiest to 3d scan an example of the original, use
that to create the slice file, then start printing, testing, tweak the
file, print again, u
I agree that it looks fine removed but the issues of original start to come
into play especially when considering nicer cars. I like the 3D printing idea.
I wonder if that’s feasible?

I’m telling you guys, you can just peel it off and the painted surface
underneath looks pretty good.

3D print!!
Okay. It to is thermo-formed.
Paint?
Ok then, which one of us is going to take on this project!?

I'm pretty sure the crinkle stuff around the doors is a version of thermo
formed plastic.
Problem with thermo formed plastic is it will "re form" when subjected to
heat.. Interior temps in a closed car can easily reach into the 120 / 140 F
ranged which is the lower end of thermo form plastic becom
Thanks - the shriveled plastic is the problem more than the windlace.

No the crumpled hard plastic is on the doors and is not windlace. Windlace is
on the B pillars and around door openings.
The crumpled plastic stuff is only available through dealer/CC and is of
limited availability color wise and may even be unobtainium at this point. I
bought a piece for my Ch
That is not windlace. Windlace is the fabric that goes around the opening of
the door. You’re talking about the plastic material they put around the window
frame on the W123s that shrivels up from age and UV exposure. There is no fix
for that, nor is the material available from Mercedes or any

To be clear - the crumpled (shrunken) plastic trim around each of the
windows on my W123 wagon can be replaced with this stuff? And you make
house calls in exchange for a large can of Narragansett?
